Experimental Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2 Character Sheet v0.5

Image
Late last year, I created an experimental Swords & Wizardry character sheet . Now I'm back at it, but this time for Advanced Fighting Fantasy . Experimental AFF2 Character Sheet Version 0.5 My goal is to make the sheet as simple as possible while being pleasing to the eye. This one doesn't have much table time yet, hence the 0.5 designation, but I'm hoping to put it to some use here soon.

Heroes Companion

The other day I picked up the Advanced Fighting Fantasy Heroes Companion . The new types of magic, spells, talents, and so on are top notch but, it's the company rules, domain management, and mass battles that really grab my attention. With these bits, Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2 can easily hang with D&D when it comes to comprehensiveness in one fantasy game package. You really get the sense that long campaigns are possible with AFF. In short, it is absolutely excellent and packed full of value. I'm not sure when we'll get a chance to play since my core rulebook is still in storage since the fire but, I'm itching to play. I've got a hunch that I can wing it from the reference charts. Until then, I'm using the companion's Wilderness Map Generator for our upcoming Rules Cylopedia game.

Part 2: The Funnel With Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2

After dinner we picked up right back up where we stopped... Cole knew that they needed more bodies to build the ranks and with having no luck recruiting in the village he called in some favors from his army connections. The new recruiting roll went very well. Instead of rolling low for success we use the roll-high option with 15 as the base target number. As GM I adjudicated the great roll using the margin of success (> 15) as a rule of thumb. The result was that Cole now had a small host of warriors at his command one of which became a named PC - Edmond, a soldier who has seen much of the world. The rest were treated as henchmen of sorts in the classic D&D sense. AFF2 makes this incredibly easy to do: Skill 7, Stamina 7. With their ranks swollen, the original cadre of adventurers are now confident that they can take the hall and expel whatever dwells there. They split up into two asymmetrically sized teams. The smaller team took the side entrance that was tried earlier ...

Part 1: The Funnel With Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2

With me working extra long hours we haven't played anything in months. It got to the point where I said, "That's it! We're playing something this weekend!" That got the thumbs-up so it was a go. What to do. What to do... We have a really neat game world under development that we started playing in with Lamentations of the Flame Princess and continued under Dungeon Crawl Classics. At one point we even used Microscope to help us build the game world's mythology. Which, by the way, is a really great way to do it. With the setting determined I needed a location. Fixing that that was easy. I used the random dungeon generator found in the AFF2 book. Instead of creating a dungeon I created an abandoned great hall where the roof had begun falling in creating obstructions and pathways. Stuart Lloyd  posted a comment to one of my Dungeon Crawl Classics posts about porting the idea of The Funnel to Advanced Fighting Fantasy.  It's pretty nifty and qui...

Gave Advanced Fighting Fantasy a whirl

We ran our test scenario where the heroine wakes to hear the village being attacked by goblins and orcs. The orc chieftain is kidnapping the mayor's son while his warg and warband wait outside. Here's how it went. Upon being driven awake by a commotion outside, our heroine leaps from her bed and tests her LUCK. Can she don her armor and gather her weapons before being intruded upon by those who are making the martial racket? With ease. She stands beside the window of her upstairs room and looks across the window to see a gaggle of goblins smashing about and setting torch to thatched roof. Slowly she swings the window open and takes aim. With arrow loosed she reaches for another. The arrow finds its mark and the first goblin falls to his knees. One of the goblin's companions turns to pull him from out of the street in order to preserve a sword swinger for when the archer is found. Another arrow is launched and the second goblin falls victim. Goblin heads swivel to find the s...

I like making character sheets so when I got my hands on the new Advanced Fighting Fantasy I had to give it a go. Here it is in PDF .

Memories of The Forest of Doom

Advanced Fighting Fantasy landed on the doorstep yesterday. I'm only about half way through but I'm absolutely loving it. I played the game books as a kid and extrapolated from them a stand-alone system when I didn't even properly know what an RPG was. The 1989 version never made it to my hands which makes this reading adventure all the more fantastic. More to come.
